William Acorn is Founder and Principal of Acorn Consulting Services, LLC. For over 30 years, he has provided innovative analysis, engineering consultation and project design and delivery services for hundreds of projects ranging from institutional laboratories to cleanroom facilities for the semiconductor industry.

During his more than 20 year tenure as founder and principal of a multi-office, multi-disciplined design firm providing engineering services on projects throughout the country, he developed successful techniques for evaluating and solving the most complex of project design and management issues.  He received numerous awards for technical excellence and has been recognized for ongoing technical achievements, innovation and foresight by peers, associates and clients, including election to the level of Fellow in the industry-leading organization ASHRAE.  His consulting expertise has been influential in shaping the approach to code compliance and life safety in semiconductor and similar advanced technology facilities.

Transitioning from a detailed design and project delivery firm to a solo project consulting practice, Bill capitalized on his experience to help clients identify the key issues that are the essence of their projects.  The services provided by ACS range from conceptual design to development of strategies and programs for expedited project delivery.  Bill acts as an owner’s agent and mentor, functioning as an extension of the owner’s project team.  Services provided by ACS help assure the project gets off to the right start and continues through completion and operation to maximize return on investment.

“My experience has shown that a project never gets any better than the concepts upon which it is based. Many projects represent the right answer to the wrong questions. This is why I focus on the 5% of the project time and investment that ensures success for the remaining 95% of the project.”

As a logical offshoot of his design and project consulting expertise, Bill provides forensic analysis, litigation consulting and expert testimony in support of the judicial system.  He has represented both plaintiffs and defendants in a variety of jurisdictions.  Bill’s recognized expertise in this arena includes:

  • Heating, Ventilating & Air Conditioning Systems
  • Workplace Exposures to Hazardous Materials
  • Cleanrooms for Advanced Technology Industries
  • Compliance with Codes and Standards
  • Standard of Care in Design and Construction
  • Refrigeration Systems
  • Fire and Explosions in Hazardous Occupancies
  • Piping Systems

Bill’s pragmatic approach to the forensic and litigation consulting arena is the result of real world expertise that is coupled with his many years of providing training in professional and academic settings. His ability to explain complex issues in a manner that is understandable to non-technical audiences is appreciated by juries, judges and legal professionals.

Bill has long been a mentor, coach and teacher to students and colleagues alike. Beginning in 1974 as a visiting lecturer in the University of Arizona College of Architecture he continued through the 1990s as an instructor for the University of Wisconsin Center for Continuing Engineering Education and is currently an adjunct professor at Arizona State University in the Del E. Webb School of Construction within the College of Engineering. Throughout this calling, Bill has developed the skills and means to reduce complex issues to understandable concepts that are readily grasped by his audience. Short courses and academic seminars include techniques for project management, mechanical system facility design and code compliance issues and strategies. In addition to formal academic courses, he has delivered numerous lectures and seminars on a variety topics related to the building sciences. As the author of the book Code Compliance for Advanced Technology Facilities and similar book chapters he is a recognized authority on the subject, and regularly delivers seminars & workshops to industry and academia on hazardous occupancy facility codes and life safety compliance strategies.
